ORIGINS (III) PEDRI

Pedro González López

Third chapter of the Origins series for Barça Studios OTT platform. Documentary about the personal and sporting origins of Canarian soccer player Pedri González. Filmed in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Third episode of the ORIGINS series, and second, in order of shooting, following Arthur's production (link on Vimeo). Our experience in the Canary Islands was rather brief and intense. As in other previous projects, we had a remarkably fast pre-production, as required by FC Barcelona demands. While the player had already signed a contract with Barça, he still had to wrap up the season with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the club he belonged to at the time. This meant that we had very limited time to shoot, postproduce and premiere the piece before Pedri's official presentation as FC Barcelona's new player took place.

The shooting lasted four and a half days, and we shot between Friday July 17th and Tuesday July 21st. We barely had time to settle in, working with a very tight schedule and trying to shoot all the essentials between character interviews and location scouting.

One of the most impressive things about the northwest of the island of Tenerife and the municipality of San Cristobal de La Laguna is the beauty of its coast and its rocky cliffs, with its extremely cinematographic volcanic landscapes. It is usually an area where many car brands often shoot images for the promotion of their products. Just a short distance away there is the spectacular lighthouse of Punta del Hidalgo and the natural pools of Bajamar where we shot some sequences with Pedri and his brother.

A major handicap we encountered during the shooting was the impossibility to obtain aerial images of the island, which led us to reconsider the presentation of the character at the Bajamar Lighthouse. My plan was to start the piece with a panoramic aerial shot in which we approached the lighthouse from the sea to discover Pedri behind the waves breaking against the lighthouse's breakwater. In the end, we had to shoot the sequence from the opposite angle, with Pedri on the lighthouse and the sea in the background. Nevertheless, we were able to rescue this idea in the following shooting of ORIGINS dedicated to Francisco Trincao.

Canarian wrestling, a traditional sport throughout the Canary Islands and deeply rooted in Pedri's family origins, was among the other distinctive elements that we wanted to highlight in the documentary, with the participation of a group of excellent Canarian wrestlers (Mahamadou Camara and Argeo Garcia) who volunteered to give us a wrestling exhibition in the terrero de Tegueste, the largest wrestling pavilion of all the islands.
